Who Is This Guy George?
Who is this guy George? I'm a lot like you. I worked for many years at something I was good at, yet was not my heart's desire. I love to write. I also the love the overall art of learning to communicate as clearly and powerfully as possible. Yet, I found myself in sales as a licensed insurance agent and securities representative. Later I became a sales manager. Now, if you know me, I'm about the opposite of what a salesman typically is. I've taken those tests that tell you what you should do as a career. My results were always the teacher, writer. I couldn't even fudge it to get into the sales category. Yet there I was...a sales manager. Something like oil in water. I used to say to myself, "George, what are you doing here?" I guess my success came because people could tell I was not the sales type. They could tell I just wanted to help them if I could, but if I couldn't I wasn't going to push anybody. The result is enough of them bought for just that reason -that I didn't push them - to make me somewhat of a success. But, inwardly I was miserable. I wanted to write.
Suddenly Out of Business
Then early in 2000 I found myself suddenly in the world of the unemployed. After 20 years of planning other people's financial future as a financial consultant, suddenly the firm I worked for went out of business. As a field representative I was rarely in the office to see it coming. All of a sudden one day I called in to a disconnected number. They had packed up overnight and left no forwarding instructions. Just gone. Not even a good-bye or, "Sorry, George." I was stuck with thousands of dollars in business expenses I'd put on my credit card expecting them to be reimbursed. But now I was stuck with them. Even the checks for the work I'd done would never arrive. To this day I haven't received a dime owed me. Needless to say I was devastated. But the story only got worse. As we lived on our savings I came to know first hand what I thought could never happen to me. I was a middle-aged man that no one wanted. After literally a hundred job applications for positions which fitted me like a glove, it became obvious companies preferred to hire youngsters right out of college because they can pay them entry level wages, whereas a 50 something with a family and mortgage needs more. It's not fun when the wife looks at you with those eyes that say, "George, what do we do now?" That's when I decided it was time to turn my passion of writing and the art of communication into a livelihood. For years I had been writing and re-writing marketing materials for the needs of the financial industry. I did it simply because it was easy for me to see how ineffective most marketing material is. Besides, I really enjoyed doing it. Since then I've written for financial newsletters, real estate firms, internet businesses, computer repair companies, non-profit foundations, and more. It became apparent to me the overwhelming majority of small businesses just have no real clue about what it takes to create marketing which works.
I Know How it Feels to be a Small Business Owner
As a long time business man myself I can identify with those out there in the trenches everyday trying to make things happen. So, in an effort to give back to the community, I began the workshops at the Cocoa Beach Area Chamber of Commerce entitled, "How to Market with the Power to Sell." From these workshops I'm even more convinced the small business person needs somewhere they can go to get reliable help. I know many of these small business owners personally. I know they have severely limited budgets and it makes me cringe to see them waste money on marketing materials that aren't going to produce the results they need. As one business woman said, "I recommend George for any business that could use a boost, especially in this economic environment." My aim to make this site a resource for those who don't have the time or the resources to waste on every new or flashy idea that comes along. Here my goal is to provide no cost information about tested tips and techniques that really work. Plus you don't have to waste your time reading every marketing newsletter or gimmick that reaches your e-mail box. I'm doing that for you and filtering out the junk. If I'm doing this right, this web site will be a blessing for both of us. I get to write to my heart's content and you get to use it as a dependable place for solid answers. Of course, I've been asked how in the world can I afford to do this? Well, that's the exciting part.
The Exciting Part
The web host and design system I use is Site Build It (SBI). It caters to beginners, but is used also by professional webmasters. I had been watching them for about three years before I used them.
